The man who built an empire alone

 DHIRUBHAI AMBANI

Dhirubhai Ambani was an Indian business magnate and founder of Reliance Industries, one of the largest conglomerates in India. He was born on December 28, 1932, in Chorwad, a small village in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, India. His father was a school teacher and his mother was a homemaker.

Ambani's early years were spent in poverty, and he had to work hard to support his family. He completed his schooling in Chorwad and then moved to Aden, Yemen to work as a clerk at A. Besse & Co., a trading firm. He worked there for several years and gained valuable experience in the field of international trade.

In 1958, Ambani returned to India and started his own business, Reliance Commercial Corporation, which dealt in textiles and other goods. He began by importing polyester yarn and selling it to textile manufacturers in India. He quickly realized that the textile industry in India was highly fragmented and had a lot of potential for growth. He then decided to focus on building a vertically integrated textile company that would manufacture and sell textiles, rather than just importing and selling them.

In 1965, Ambani set up Reliance Textiles Industries Ltd, which was the first company in India to manufacture polyester yarn. This was a significant achievement, as it marked the beginning of the company's journey to become one of the largest textile companies in India. In the following years, Ambani expanded the company's operations and established a number of other textile mills and plants across India.

In the 1970s, Ambani decided to diversify his business and ventured into the petrochemical industry. He set up a plant to manufacture polyester fibers, which were in high demand in the textile industry. He also set up a plant to manufacture polypropylene, which is used to make a variety of products including packaging materials, furniture, and automotive components.

In the 1980s, Ambani expanded his business further and entered the oil and gas industry. He set up a refinery in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which was the largest in the world at the time. He also set up a petrochemical complex in the same area, which was one of the largest in the world. These two projects were instrumental in making Reliance Industries one of the largest companies in India.

Ambani was also known for his business acumen and strategic vision. He was a pioneer in the field of corporate finance and was one of the first Indian businessmen to raise money from global capital markets. He also set up a number of joint ventures with foreign companies, which helped to bring in new technologies and expertise to India.

Ambani was also a strong advocate of economic liberalization and believed that India needed to open up its economy to the world in order to become a major economic power. He was a vocal supporter of the economic reforms that were implemented in India in the early 1990s, and played a key role in the liberalization of the Indian economy.

Ambani was also a philanthropist and believed in giving back to society. He set up the Dhirubhai Ambani Foundation, which focuses on education and healthcare, and also established a number of schools and hospitals across India.

In 2002, Ambani suffered a stroke and was unable to actively manage the company. However, he continued to be involved in the company's affairs and was an active member of the board of directors until his death on July 6, 2002.

Dhirubhai Ambani's legacy continues to live on through Reliance Industries, which is now one of the largest and most successful companies in India.
